Road verge
Total species seen at this site:
This verge is around 3 metres wide and backed by a wet ditch and a hedge, mainly comprising Ash and Hawthorn. Two Ash trees overhang the central section.
The verge being managed to improve biodiversity as part of the County Council/Parish Council verges biodiversity project. It has been surveyed by NatureSpot but we would welcome additional wildlife records (plants, animals or fungi) from the community.
The aim of the project is to demonstrate that by managing the grassland as a wildflower meadow it can support a much greater diversity of wildlife species. Different species come and go throughout the year so we will get a much better understanding of the biodiversity value of this site if local residents can add records of what they have seen. Please take a photo if possible and include it with your record, using NatureSpot's Submit Records form. Your record and any photos will then appear on this page!
Mowing will cease between April and August to allow the grasses and wildflowers to grow and bloom, providing food and cover to a wide variety of insects and other creatures.
Native wildflower species were sown in 2021 and some of these plants have now become established - such as Oxeye Daisy, Black Knapweed and Yellow Rattle.
A list of all the species found at the site, together with any images taken, appears below.
The verge grassland supports a wide range of wildflowers and grasses (over 30 species). The Yellow Rattle sown in 2021 has become established and as it is semi-parasitic on grasses it helps to reduce grasses from becoming overly dominant, creating space for more wildflowers. The underlying soil is nutrient-rich so it enables plants such as Cow Parsley and Nettles to grow profusely. These are important plants for wildlife, attracting and supporting a wide range of species including the caterpillars of Small Tortoiseshell and Peacock butterflies.
The ditch at the rear adds further habitat variety and is supporting Great Hairy Willowherb. Similarly the hedge adds to the wildlife interest though will influence the plants found on the verge due to some shading.
