The NatureSpot Species of the Month for September is this image of a Lesser Yellowlegs, taken by NatureSpot contributor Marian Markham.
Whatever happened, the September Species of the Month was always going to be yellow. For a long time it looked like it was going to be the Clouded Yellow Butterfly, Colias croceus, which has had a remarkable month, but then one week at Rutland Water changed everything. In addition to the supporting cast of Green Sandpiper, Greenshank, Black-tailed Godwit, Ruff, Marsh Harriers, Spoonbills and one last Osprey, some North American tourists dropped in. A Pectoral Sandpiper, Calidris melanotos, started the fuss, but the Lesser Yellowlegs, Tringa flavipes, stole the show. Not as yellow as a Clouded Yellow, but probably come a lot further to visit us.
