Buttoned Snout - Hypena rostralis

Description

Wingspan 29 to 32 mm.  This species is rather variable and maybe various shades of brown, often with a rather two-tone appearance being darker from the 'shoulders' and paler nearer to the edge of the wings..  It is a narrower species than the more common Snout (Hypena rostralis).

Habitat

Hedgerows and woodland edge, particularly where hop is present.

When to see it

Main flight period is May and June but individuals may persist into early autumn.

Life History

Larvae feed on Hop.

UK Status

Very much a southern and south-eastern species in Britain, with nearly all records occurring south of The Wash.

VC55 Status

Rarely recorded in Leicestershire and Rutland.
