Cheilymenia fimicola

Description

Very small orange discs on dung, usually cowpats, each fringed with dark rooting hairs.

Similar Species

There are several other dark fringed Cheilymenia associated with dung; microscopic examination of hairs and spores is needed to separate them.  Eyelash fungi Scutellinia also have dark hair fringes, but are more orange-red and associated with rotting wood or soils.

Recording advice

Photograph in habitat; note substrate.  We recommend that this is verified from a specimen by an expert before submission to NatureSpot.  Microscopic examination of asci, spores and other cell structures is usually necessary.
